Thanks to Deanna Frazier of FEMA and Mike Peacock of the Small Business Administration (SBA) for coming by this morning to give us some very important information for homeowners, renters, and business owners affected by the tornado on November 17.
If you haven't yet, please consider registering with FEMA to see what assistance you may be eligible for from either of these organizations. According to Mike and Deanna, it will be so much better to register and not need the assistance than to not have this tool available to you.
The number to call to register with FEMA, and to start the process of applying for a very low interest loan with SBA, is 1-800-621-FEMA(3362). You can also register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or through your smart phone at m.fema.gov. FEMA has also opened a Disaster Recovery Center at the Festival of Lights building at 2200 E Washington St in East Peoria.
When meeting with FEMA representatives, remember to have the following things handy:
• Insurance declaration information and insurance information
• Social Security number
• Current telephone number or contact information
• Checking account information (for direct deposit of FEMA grant money)
Is it necessary to register if you're a homeowner whose property was insured? Deanna said many homeowners are finding that their property values are being depreciated by their insurance companies. The assistance that might be available to a homeowner could help cover the shortfall left by insurance, up to around $32,000.
